HJF is seeking a Scientist I develop and conduct research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.
This position will be in support of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics at USUHS. The current project falls under the Combat Casualty Care USUHS priority area of institutional focus. Development of this therapy by understanding the mechanisms in a systems specific way will help us to improve the efficacy of treatment for nerve agent poisoning. The present research program is entitled: "Brief Isoflurane exposure for post-exposure neuroprotection against nerve agents: Proteomic analysis to understand the mechanisms".
Responsibilities
Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
• Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
• Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
• Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
• Performs animal work in the adult rat. Work involves studying the toxic effect of a model nerve agent (paraoxon, an insecticide), neuroprotection by brief isoflurane exposure and collection of brain tissues for proteomic analysis.
• Performs monitoring of seizure in treated animals using Racine scale and intracardial perfusion of animals using formaldehyde to fix the tissues at the end of the study for histopathological /neuropathological analyses.
• Provide laboratory help and support for 1) dissection of the brain areas, 2) neuropathology analysis, microscopy, imaging and image analysis, which will be critical for the proposed studies.
• Provide help with bioinformatic analysis of the proteomic data in collaboration with the senior colleagues and departmental experts.
• Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others.
• Experience in working with the paraoxon model in the rat is highly preferred.
• Prior experience in the proposed animal model is highly preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities
• Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

During the program, Scientists-in-Residence will work to explore a new area of biology.
Within Arcadia’s new scientific framework, we have two general buckets: dynamic projects and a centralized platform. Projects are fluid efforts that allow us to ask key biological questions. Our platform leverages evolutionary comparisons across diverse species and tool development, which together help us make better hypotheses and test them more efficiently. While the platform shapes projects, projects provide critical test cases for refining the platform.
Similar to Project Scientists at Arcadia, Scientists-in-Residence will spend the first month or so getting to know the team by contributing their expertise and skills to ongoing projects. Scientists-in-Residence will then initiate a pilot project on the basis of team synergy and their specific interests. A pilot should make use of Arcadia’s unique expertise and structure and, as such, it should not be a direct continuation of the project scientist’s past or current research. Upon 1–3 months of design and de-risking, we may approve pilots to move to our central platform for organism and tool selection/development. Given the short timeframe for the Scientist-in-Residence program (up to 1 year), they will likely work primarily on one or more pilot-stage projects.
Candidates applying to the Scientist-in-Residence position should be interested in exploring areas of biology which are distinct from their previous work, but for which they are uniquely positioned to study. Reporting to the project team leader and the Sr. Director of Therapeutic Programs, this position will play a crucial role in enabling next-generation gene editing therapeutics; including the characterization... of the therapeutic target as well as the effects of gene editing in both cells and animal models. You will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact as you partner with the therapeutic project, in vivo and NGS teams in order to advance projects toward the clinical phase. This role will be based in Emeryville, California.
About the Role
The day-to-day responsibilities of this role will include:
• Perform transfection of primary cells and cell lines to support lead finding and selection for pipeline programs
• Perform molecular analysis of in vitro and in vivo editing outcomes using next-generation sequencing, quantitative PCR, and RNA sequencing.
• Analyze the effect of gene editing employing multiple biochemistry techniques (Western Blot, ELISA, activity assays)
• Collaborate internally and with external partners on the optimization of non-viral delivery approaches
• Utilize non-viral and viral delivery approaches to plan in vivo studies and perform various molecular analyses to support internal therapeutic programs (handling animals not required)
• Independently trouble-shoot technical issues as needed
• Analyze and interpret experimental data and present results at team meetings and company-wide meetings
• Contribute to the selection/design of therapeutic strategies
• Provide mentorship / training to research associates as appropriate
• Prepare accurate and timely data summaries and contribute to writing of reports, papers, and patent manuscripts
